I have the honour to inform you that

Mr. T. Murphy and Mr. P. Grant, whose appointment to the posts of Assistant Superintendents of Police were approved by Mr. Thomas in his despatch No.252 14291 CR of the 10th of September, 1931, and by Sir Philip

Cunliffe-Lister (now Viscount Swinton) in his telegram 38420No.18 of the 16th of February, 1933, respectively,

retired on pension on the 19th of February, 1938, and that subject to your approval I have appointed Mr. F. W. Shaftain and Mr. R. H. E. Marks to the vacant

posts.

Mr. Shaftain, who is forty-seven years of

age, was appointed a police constable in August, 1912, and in September, 1935, was promoted to be Chief Inspector.

In 1927 he was awarded the Fourth Class Police Medal and

in 1935 the King's Silver Jubilee Medal. He has had considerable experience in the Criminal Investigation Department and is reported as being an officer of ability

and initiative.

3. Mr. Marks is fifty-one years of age and was a pointed a police constable in July, 1909. He was appointed Chief Inspector in August, 1933, and was awarded

a Fourth Class Police Medal in 1928 and a Third Class Medal for long and faithful service in 1934. He is
